I'd guess it's the fruit cake George.  Both types of clamps would seem to 
exert their force in the same way.  If you overtighten a screw clamp, sure 
it will start to make the hose creep around the fitting, but if only 
tightened snugly they work pretty much the same.  Plus, I've only seen the 
clamp type on low pressure systems, not on things like car radiators.  (I 
think the clamp types were a cheapie invention by someone at MOPAR...)
