I know it's nowhere as exciting as the exact diameter or the tensile
strength
of a grade 8 bolt...but maybe we can salvage something.

grade 8 bolts are very brittle, they are used primairly for making things
very tight
but have a low shear strength. in some industrial applications grade 8 bolts
are
used as shear pins.
grade 5s are the way to go for shear strength
(for a motorcycle lift the 8s will be fine though)
