          Rick:
What are the pistons? weisco reverse dome, ross reverse dome,
or stock harley? Unless you use a reverse dome pistons like a
weisco you will run into high compression problems 10:1+ or
more unless you also have the heads (combustion chamber)
relieved to adjust the compression back to 9.5:1. Normally
using one of the popular 1200 piston kits, you would use a
.015 base gasket(standard base gasket) and a standard head
gasket, things will be fine. When machining the heads and
cylinders one must be careful about any alterations on
cylinder length or removing any material on the head face.
Clearances are very close in the combustion chamber, i.e.
relief's cut into the stock pistons for valve clearance. You
should always use either clay or solder placed on the piston
top to check your piston to valve clearance. The other thing
one has to be concerned about is the area between the piston
top and the head at the edges, (called the squish zone). This
makes the deck hight a critical measurement in that you need
this "squish zone" to be close but not too close. ( I don't
have the figures right at hand. Check "The sportster
performance handbook" for a complete discussion on this.

However if you are using one of the popular 1200 kits, usually
you don't have to worry about this. The proper gaskets,
(thickness) are provided or the after-market shop provides
          then and everything is bolt-on.

Several magazines and the sportster performance handbook all
describe this upgrade in detail.. Usually the kits also have
          detailed instructions.

          Good luck...

Having just received my cylinders and heads back from the machine shop
after being bored for a 1200 conversion on my 94 XL here's my
question; is it necessary to measure the deck height? The machinist
told me no that this is a bolt on application. Any comments or
     experiences would be appreciated.

The mods include machining the cylinders and matching to flat top
pistons, the heads were also clearanced to match the cylinders. The
rest of the engine is stock.

     Thanks

     Rick
