BUT . . . everyone else on the planet uses teflon tape from the hardware store ($1.99) This is not a half-ass solution, teflon tape is made for precisely this type of application. I think the '79 has an inner threaded tank, no? Wrap 3 complete turns of the tape on the petcock threads and install the petcock. If the petcock ends up turned in the wrong direction with proper tightening, remove, remove tape, re-wrap petcock with *more* than 3 turns of tape and try again.
