RE: Tappets and pushrodsFrom: Ken Durstine <kdurstine@gmail.com> Next Article (by Date): re: oil is good......SUBURBS of....Oklahoma! "david tomney" Jordan sez: I am getting a ticking sound and I think it may be from a tappet. What is the best way to check a tappet and if I replace them, should I do just the bad one or all of them. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Get a mechanics stethoscope or just get a big screw driver and stick the fat end next to your ear and the other on the tappet block. That will help isolate whether it is a lifter noise or not. Somtimes pulling a spark wire off and grounding do the engine runs on one cyclinder will help too. You didn't say what year the bike was. You will have to compare pushrod part numbers between the T-storm engine and the stock sportster engine too see if you needed different pushrods. I don't remember this being and issue unless the heads were decked or thick head gasket were used. Did the noise start right after the conversion or is it new? Did you just add a windshield? The sportster engines are loud clanky beasts and the first time you hear one with a windshield can be "enlightening" so to speak. Does the noise change with engine rpm or engine temperature? Stock lifters are fine as long as you aren't routinely visiting 6000 rpm plus. Skinny Kenny Next Article (by Date): re: oil is good......SUBURBS of....Oklahoma! "david tomney" |
